Lorina Harding: Clean Break
By Pauline Berry
This Canadian born singer-songwriter stands out as an evolved craftsperson. Clean Break is itself an outstanding track, exemplifying the current, but timeless country/folk style, with as catchy a hook as you might expect from any international artist in this genre, yet stemming from way back, as far as Woodie Guthrie. The songs range from the optimistic to the intentionally ugly and confrontational, peopled with varying outcasts and packed with such great imagery and social comment that I found myself wondering if Harding has lived some of the lives she sings of (she's not from round here after all). She somehow vividly appears among the characters within the tracks which were mostly produced by Ben King, Nick Abbott and herself. Recorded at the now lost Helen Young Studio, lots of locals were involved, such as the Jews Bros., Linn Lorkin and Caitlin Smith. Harding plays guitars along with Nigel Gavin. On Flaming Pearl Records through Global Routes Music.
