Vauxhall: Hanging On By A Thread
By Alistair Wickens
Auckland brothers David and James McLaughlin have returned to the studio to produce Vauxhall's first full-length recording. With three EPs already under their belt, they have recruited music veterans Rikki Morris and Debbie Harwood to 'team Vauxhall' and in the process have produced a finely crafted album, full of deep, mournful songs. At times almost reminiscent of Joy Division (although sounding better produced than many of JD's releases) these two brothers complement each other well and the band obviously benefits from the closeness that the siblings bring to it. Most of the songs follow the same basic formula - starting quietly with the piano and building up to a solid rock finish. This doesn't detract too much from the overall listening experience, but does mean that many actually sound quite similar. Still well worth a listen, this album will please a wide range of people.
