Sharon: Hold Onto Life
By Pauline Berry
Old style country pop that at its best reminds me of very early Olivia Newton John. There will be much older folk out there who find this music quite charming in its nostalgic stylings (well suitable for Jim Sutton's 1ZB show). All tracks are penned by Sharon Blow, bar one which is co-written. Produced capably at Orewa's Manuka Studios, it features guitarist Reggie Thompson throughout. Sharon has an agreeable voice and obviously good intentions, writing songs that tell stories typical of this genre, lost love, infidelity, family, growing old, reminiscences. I liked the direction on My Breaking Heart, which is rockier and a welcome relief way down the tracklist from some very similar sounding tunes (same key, same bpm). Occasionally Sharon rushes her phrasing and sounds a little nervous, but this would all go down well live at the local club. Available via the internet at flyboy.blow@actrix.gen.nz
