Darren Watson: Soul Pacific Soul
By Martyn Pepperell
According to my research, you may well know of Darren Watson as the frontman of Smokeshop, a Kiwi blues showband that were very popular during the late '80s and early '90s. I didn't know of Darren's music or past but was instantly captivated by the smooth soul and blues sound he has developed. This album oozes qualitymusicianship and music production, complete with a backing band comprising members of Wellington outfits such as TrinityRoots, Twinset, Southside of Bombay and Windy City Strugglers. What really struck me was Darren's ability as a storyteller, and his ability to express a strong set of emotions and moods in his music. Contained within 'Soul Pacific Soul' are stories that everybody can relate to on some level or another. This turns out to be yet another quality NZ summertime release. Out on Red Rocks Records.
