The Void: First Contact
By Ania Glowacz
The Void, not to be confused with Christchurch's Into The Void, are a keyboard-driven pop/rock bank consisting of Treve Clayton (guitars, vocals and sole songwriter), main vocalist Kellie Vincent, Frances Jones on bass and keys, Tim Lambert bass, Kelly Anderson bvs and Malcom Rodriguez on drums. Based in Auckland, they've had that line-up for two years, following the usual rock'n'roll story of surviving a series of drummers. The band started in 1997 and progressively improved on their talent pool of musicianship over time, leading to this, their debut album. Recorded at The Lab with Tom Miskin and Olly Harmer, The Void's sound is breezy, upbeat, friendly and warm, with three-part harmonies. It veers on the twee at times, but then there's nothing wrong with nice! A bit B52s, Go Gos, '80s vibe, with a few slower numbers. There's even a hint of Pink Floyd. The lyrics cover the usual ground of love, relationships etc. but don't try and be too complicated or clever. Check it out at www.thevoid.co.nz
