Deborah Wilding: Facing Square One
By Mike Moroney
A brave effort from DeboRah [sic] with chunky guitar accompaniment to some tender, self-penned songs. I feel it's let down by the "plugged-in" acoustic guitar, it sounds too brittle and doesn't change for the whole album. There's a quiet mood to the songs and some nice harmonies even though the vocals are a little unconfident and sometimes miss the note. There's a sense though, that she is a great live performer - it sounds a bit like a live recording - the delivery is introspective and unapologetic. There's enough variation to hold the interest - there are no short songs. The playing is good too, just some bad engineering choices. I look forward to the next, bigger production CD, clearly this a burgeoning talent.
