Keriti Mowat: Maitreya Calling
By Andrew Healey
Produced by Pedro Oldam, this album is a blend between rock and hip hop. Opening track I'm Not Here, reminds me of Linkin Park with a melodic falsetto vocals over an angst filled rap and distorted guitars. With a gravely voice reminiscent of Alice Cooper, Mowat delivers some soul-searching lyrics. Meitreya Calling, is a dedication to Meitreya whom Mowat considers to be the Messiah. There are some impressive grooves on this album. I particularly like the congas and subtle bass lines on Falling Over and track five After the Revolution. The disappointing aspect of this album is the production; particularly with the heavier tracks. The sound is often muddy and indistinct - this isn't helped by the heavily processed electric guitar sounds. The acoustic guitar has a large presence on this album, but at times sounds thin and lacking in warmth. For the well-written, thought provoking lyrics, and good tunes, you will nonetheless enjoy this album.
