Mark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard: Spiritual Graffiti

By Ania Glowacz
Mark and Brenda are no strangers to playing or recording music - this is their 18th album! Their first since 'Millennium Hippies' released 1998, it's a triumph of true songwriting talent. Recorded in Wellington at home studio Braeburn with Robbie Duncan, it's a beautifully recorded, largely acoustic album that'll bring tears to your eyes with its tenderness. Mark manages to channel David Gray (with a touch of Paul Simon thrown in), whilst Brenda has a great Marianne Faithful tinge. Their songs alternate throughout the album, providing interest and stylistic relief. Other instruments beside guitars include rowan lute, electric and acoustic mandolins, violin, cello, along with various percussion instruments. Based in the Coromandel, Brenda and Mark have toured extensively around the country and overseas. Loosely placed under the folk umbrella, their music incorporates many other elements including blues, jazz, alt-country. Do yourself a favour and introduce yourself to this music.
