The Cakekitchen: Put Your Foot Inside the Door

By Renee Jones
Graeme Jefferies, in solo guise in this version of The Cakekitchen, has been part of the fabric of NZ music for many years, since forming Nocturnal Projections with his also talented brother Peter. After a long period away - living mainly in Germany - Jefferies made a brief reappearance for a handful of gigs in October, bringing with him this new album (the Cakekitchen's ninth). The Cakekitchen has been around in one form or another since 1988, and has most often been a band effort; however this album is largely Graeme alone. He plays everything from guitar and piano to cello, viola and assorted objects (including a toy gun), creating a wide musical palette. But it is his unique baritone and songwriting on centre stage here. The songs range from the remarkably radio-friendly I'm So Glad That You Dropped Out Of High School to introspective numbers like On The Rocks Again. The lyrics are thoughtful and interesting, covering themes of consumerism, power and a general yearning for simplicity. Jefferies fans should certainly investigate this album, as should anyone looking for a dose of intellligent songwriting and unconventional musical craftsmanship. It is available through www.thecakekitchen.net
