The Inkling: Deluge
By Jacob Connor
These nine mostly instrumental mood pieces fizz and snap through the synapses and are far more broad ranging than the impenetrable glossy black sleeve might suggest. Flimsy touchstones may include King Crimson, Yes and Mike Oldfield. Fine musicianship on display with core group Philip Smiley (drums), Luke Bang (keys), Osaka Silenzio (guitar) and Stefan Garstang (bass) abetted by Wellington wunderkids including David Long, Toby Laing and Luke Buda - who is also credited with production advice. Braille could precipitate a bad trip, as it collapses into malevolent laughter. Silenzio picks up the mic for Foreign Exchange, something plaintive about estrangement. Recording was overseen by Lee Prebble, no small undertaking with a textured ensemble affair (other instruments featured: percussion, trumpet, cornet, sax, synth, flute, banjo and lap steel). It's prog-rock with jazzy, avant guarde inflections that fire this listener's imagination. Long's Labcoats project and Buda's 'C-Sides' share a similar vernacular. Worth investigating - out on Capitalrecordings. contact@theinkling.org
