Mother Guru: Mother Guru
By Dave Gideon
A hard, heavy and very contemporary album from Nelson’s present day metallers, 'Mother Guru’ warms to my stereo like hot rock to ice. Engineered, mixed and mastered by Tim Shackleton at Nine-eleven Studios in Wellington and showing off obvious recording skills, these rockers have taken their music career by the teeth, showing a strong dose of Kiwi motivation. There are some cliché movements and progressions in the song structures, however played with thought and feeling towards a common rock’n’roll goal. Lyrics tackle some quite deep moments, soul searching is the thing here. My personal favourite Unconditional talks of love sought, found and uplifting. Mother Guru are a tight, dedicated band with definite musical skills. Guitars, drums and bass are all hard driven, even in the sensitive moments. I’d like to hear them in a few years, when they’ve relaxed a little more. It’s self-released so check out their website: www.motherguru.com for purchasing details.
