OdESSA: Oak Park Avenue
By Jessie Scoullar
OdESSA came together in 2002 and shaped their renowned live act through an 18-month residency at Amba bar in Wellington, along with numerous and varied other engagements. 'Oak Park Avenue' is their debut release, a translation of their 'garage r'n'b' live show. The music is a funky jazz-lounge style, and like his charming live performance style, Matt Pender's vocals are always in the foreground. Single Bring The Money Back makes a lively beginning. Pender's lyrics are narrative, particularly in tracks like the whimsical Promises, Promises, sinister Sugar Pop as well as the brilliant and chilled out title track. OdESSA lived through a band's worst nightmare when early recordings for this album were lost. Recorded at The Surgery and mixed by Aidan Mills, the album's weak point is surprisingly its production quality - surprising because Lee Prebble was the recording engineer.
