Billy TK Junior: Three Sides to a Mirror
By Nick Batt
It must be hard trying to make it under your own guitar-slinger terms in a small industry where your father is still considered a guitar legend. Thankfully Billy TK Jnr appears capable of stepping up to the mark. He's been doing all sorts in recent years including playing alongside The Neville Brothers and George Thorogood, and now has finally released this début album. A number of quality musicians play on the album notably Brent Turner - keyboards and programming; Ritchie Campbell - drums, programming; Max Hohepa - bass; Kovi Mongellis - drums and percussion; Joe Kopua - percussion; Kiri Te Kahika and Nat Rose - backing vocals and special guest - rapper MC Taaz. As that list suggests 'Three Sides To A Mirror' features a wide assortment of styles including pop, rock, blues and reggae as well as an unusual dance influenced rendition of Black Magic Woman. With the exception of the tribute to Santana, the remaining tracks have been composed by Billy TK Jnr and Brent Turner. Recorded at Souled Out Records and Echo Productions the album aptly shows off Billy's singing and guitar playing skills. Thankfully this is not a shredfest, the album shows a depth and maturity not typical in a début. We could well be seeing another legend in the making.
