Confucius and Mysterious D:: Train of Thought
By Jessie Scoullar
C&MD are brothers Paul and Damien Bimler, from NZ's spiritual home of drum'n'bass, Christchurch and this follow up to 2001's 'Project Mysteco' (Footnote Records), is a collection spanning three years. It mixes the new with a few familiar older tracks and traverses a spectrum of styles within the genre of drum'n'bass. While 'Train of Thought' doesn't break new ground, it doesn't lack for quality vocal contributions. UK's Raggadon features on opening track Dangerzone (wa wa wa) and Red Carpet and MC Mana adds his two cents to Twister. The Subethics' track Here it Comes is sublime, and MC Kyla's contribution on I Sense Trouble is a teasing reminder of her substantial vocal talent. LX (Aus) displays her vocal prowess on the acclaimed You Can't Stop Me. There are also contributions from Woosh and the Booty Looters (Aus). Aside from the breaks, C&MD add another level through the use of vocals and live instrumentation, touching on a broad range of styles from funk and hip hop through to ragga - although you'll find none of that on standout track, the relentless New Style.
