Johnny Lippiet: Backbeat Project
By Peter Dent
Funky! This is an outstanding release from Wellington-based British saxophonist Johnny Lippiet and his band. The nine groove-filled tracks were recorded at Massey University this year and feature some very tasty playing indeed. Although all funky, a lot of terrain is covered, including electric jazz and reggae. I must make mention of the players as they are all incredible. Manny Abrahams (bass), Noel Clayton (guitar), Johnny Lippiet (tenor sax), Deva Mahal (daughter of Taj Mahal, vocals), Ian Parker (drums), Lance Phillips (percussion) and Ben Wilcox (Rhodes). My vote for MVP goes to Whitirea Polytech’s Manny Abrahams, whose 6-string bass expeditions are beyond belief! The leader’s quirky soloing adds a unique dimension to the recording, and keeps the listener wanting more. Indeed, this is an album that just gets better and better with repeated listening - and I loved it the first time! Highly recommended.
