Mark de Clive-Lowe: Tide's Arising
By Stephen Jewell
Not counting improvised project 'The Island of Nuvonesia', 'Tide's Arising' is now London-based keyboardist Mark de Clive-Lowe's first album since his debut was released on Kog Transmissions way back in the last millennium. Unlike 'Six Degrees' which was recorded in NZ with mostly local collaborators 'Tide's Arising' was composed and constructed in London with a largely international cast, although some Kiwis including Kim Patterson do crop up in the mix. This album also finds de Clive-Lowe moving away from the previous house/jazz combo as he embraces the broken beat and other similar sounds promoted by his London mates, who include Bugz in the Attic and 4 Hero's Dego. Nathan Haines' 2003 album 'Squire for Hire' is a good reference point and indeed not only does he and brother Joel contribute to 'Tide's Arising' but some of that album's guest list, such as London rapper Lyric L, are also present.
