Payola: Gone to Ground

By Tony Parker
Recently formed Auckland band Payola draw on their rock and soul influences with a set of original songs that feature the distinctive vocals of songwriter/guitarist Solomon Cole. Recorded live in York Street Studios 'Gone To Ground' captures the spirit of the band and features nice Rhodes and Hammond touches along with economical guitar lines in the soul fashion. The fact that Payola has only been together a short time shows in some of the songs' arrangements being not quite fully developed while a little more time editing and mixing would have enhanced their sound somewhat. That said, the combination of Cole's vocals with the band's other vocalist Sophie Tupuola, provide the high points of this album and point to potential for commercial appeal. Overall a workmanlike first effort providing an introduction to their brand of soul-based rock.
