Ride on Estrada: Dancing for Architecture
By Andrew Healey
The second release from this Christchurch quartet - now apparently disbanded with three members setting sail on their OEs. The album kicks off well with distorted guitars and manic drums on the instrumental Trevelly. All eight tracks display an interesting interchange between two electric guitars panned left and right. The group's sound is reminiscent of the jingly, jangly pop made famous by Flying Nun bands like The Clean and The Verlaines. Where Ride on Estrada differs from these bands, unfortunately for them, is in the failure to deliver good tunes and memorable hooks. For a melody junky like myself this album is hard work, exacerbated by the insipid delivery style of the vocalists. If you like the garage pop of bands from the Flying Nun stable, you will likely get something out of this album. However, if like me, you prefer something a little easier on the ear, you will likely sense why three band members may have cut and run.
