Torch Song Band: Light Moves

By Pauline Berry
Only vocalist Carol Storey is pictured on the cover, but this recording is the collaborative effort of an ensemble that includes Dave Maybee on guitar and keyboardist Liam Ryan, who also arranged and produced. The first track is a Ryan-composed instrumental, an upbeat Latin jazz tune. Since I Know Love has a soft Astrid Gilberto style of vocal. Later on Storey sings and contributes to the Maori lyric adaptation of standard Autumn Leaves, which owes a lot to the Eva Cassidy arrangement. Storey composes solo on Pohutukawa which has a feel-good South Pacific flavour. She is at her best on these gentle tracks with only the hint of jazz nuance. Further on things get slightly funkier, a little bit Steely Dan, such as on instrumental Funkflewin (Ryan). The overall impression is of nostalgia, a kind of chocolate box sampler of many by-gone jazz eras, with a Kiwiana connection. Apparently a good representation of the band's live set.
