All Red Cables: Happy Accidents
By Peter Dent
All Red Cables is the current musical identity of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, Andrew Spittle. Under his previous musical guise, Dating Godot, Spittle's songwriting output was prodigious. As All Red Cables that hasn't changed - 'Happy Accidents' features some 21 tracks, all recorded over a 12 month period. The album was performed and programmed (and I assume produced) by Andrew Spittle, recorded by Brendan White at Ward's Musicworks in Whangarei. As for the music, it's generally a departure from the Dating Godot collection, starting with the full-on electronic/dance vibe of opening track The Brewer, featuring an unyielding drum machine pattern and colourful, pulsating synths. Generally the other tracks stick either with the dance vibe, or - for sheer contrast - stark acoustics. There are a sprinkling of rockers in there too, to balance things out. Spittle's voice is too often monotone and pitchy in places. The guitar playing in general is excellent, and the drum programming organic and tactile. It's difficult to digest so many songs in one listen, so perhaps a note for fewer (and more diverse) songs on any future recordings.
