The Bads: Earth from Space
By Andrew Healey
For those who still haven't heard The Bads are guitarist Brett Adams and singer Dianne Swann. After several years and as many close calls to pop superstardom in the UK, they are back living the simple life in Auckland. This new album is a well-crafted collection of songs in a classic pop genre. The opener Off the Rails, which is my favourite, treats the listener to a feast of ethereal vocal harmonies and lyrical electric guitars, both sweeping over a foundation of acoustic guitar playing. Though Swann handles lead vocals on most of the tracks the album is sprinkled with a refreshing blend of voices from both partners, creating warm feel-perfect music to relax to with a glass of your favourite red wine. Released on newcomer Christchurch indie South Recordings the album shows great musicianship and songwriting ability in a number of styles. There are touches of pop/rock on Off the Rails and Bit By Bit; jazz with May it Not Always Be; and country on Bush Fire Sunset. Despite that variety The Bads have managed to create a sound of their own. If you enjoy well-crafted songs with melodies to die for, I strongly recommend you get your hands on this album.
