groundswell: Songs from the Sleepout

By Tim Page
From the first track this album had my attention. Mr Oblivious is a beautifully produced reggae effort with fabulously atmospheric lead guitar, and a warm bass that just gets you in the guts. groundswell (with a deliberately lower case g) was originally formed around the vocals and songs of Ben Throp who also contributes guitar and percussion. Lindsay Gibb and Darryl Jones provide electric guitar and drums respectively (although since recording, Jones has been replaced by Jarrod Gillespie), with Tara Preston completing the lineup on bass. The lyrics are thoughtful yet accessible, all written by Throp with the exception of To Be Continued which is a band collaboration. They recorded the album in Wellington's Inca Studios over five days with the engineering input of Mike Gibson. Overall this is a well-presented album that I enjoyed reviewing.
