Murk108: The Murkwon LP
By Gareth Shute
MC Imon Star has produced this album during the downtime from his main band, Rhombus. His trademark incorporation of sci-fi ideas into frantically fast flows is certainly present here, as are the soulful licks of guitar which he has been adding to the most recent incarnation of the Rhombus live show. However, the production style on Murkwon is rougher and gives the music an edgy feel. At some points the industrial beats and basslines sound more like they hail from a breaks album rather than a hip hop album, whilst in other places, like Digital Pimp the organic sounds of guitar and backing vocals are allowed to come to the fore. The brief moments where Imon Star allows his singing voice to be heard (Disguise and Mudmouth) show that he has another string to his bow that he is under-utilising. The only unfortunate aspect is the alienating effect of the obscure lyrical content and it is a relief to hear tracks like Buddha Breaks and Capsule Ultima which cover more honest subject material. Nonetheless this album provides more proof that the label Sugarlicks is serious about releasing interesting electronic-based music.
