Ditzy Squall: Skirt
By Jacob Connor
Cheap and cheerful punk pop from Wellington, Ditzy Squall is comprised of Aaron Lloydd (bass), Kieran Monaghan (drums and vox) and Chrissie Butler (guitar and vox). With a loose, live sound, the three-piece specialise in off-kilter, impressionistic semi-mechanical clankings. The drums seem elemental to song structure, with single stick rolls and ghost notes pacing the one chord thrums. Butler's approximate vocalisations veer between drifty sustained notes and drifty sustained wails. They cite Shellac and Deerhoof as influences, but are on the outer limits of the same universe as Meterman, Serotonin and Cripple Mr Onion. The type of band that names a track after a time signature (6/7). See-through Skirt and Cut Off Your Arm swing in an algebraic way with quick flailing toms and syncopated stabs. Lost in Frankfurt delivers more of a story and is appropriately disorienting. Instrumental twitchy robot music for bohos.
