The Downlow: The Downlow Mixtape
By Andrew Hughes
Up In Here is New Zealand's first taste of The Downlow which consists of emcee's Loki and Slopemist plus producer Zone1. The crew, who are part of Disruptiv Music, lace only five of the mixtape's 12 tracks; other artists include 4Higher, r'n'b singer Maia and Askew. As a result the CD is varied in terms of style and production quality. But let's focus on The Downlow for a minute. The group have a strong background in hip hop music, evident with their versatility in song writing. Get Drunk is very heavy and demands a stomping, rowdy audience, Up In Here sounds reggae influenced with guitars and a catchy hook, while When The Rain Gon Stop is a fine, slow ballad with great horn samples. The entirety of the compilation was recorded and mixed by Zone1 his own studio, while Esspro, DJ Miso and 4Higher handle the additional beatmaking duties. All up, a few really nice tracks and this serves its purpose in getting the new talent some exposure.
