Sola Rosa: Haunted Out-takes
By Rick Hobbs
Andrew Spraggon as Sola Rosa has carved himself a nice little niche in 'NZ electronica' or whatever it is, from his previous releases. Fans will be pleased to confirm that 'Haunted Out-Takes' is his best work yet. With a host of guest musicians (Don McGlashan, Mike Hall [Pluto], Juse [Woodcut], Johnny Pain, Kingsley Melhuish), Spraggon has delivered an album chock-a-block full of great late night listening. Standout songs are the B.Net favourite Ready Now, with its Latin touches, the spooky Sugar Lines, and the album closer Deepwater; which starts out like a Carpenters' song before descending into a whirlpool of bass, strings and effects. Each track is around five minutes long, and the album is like a good party guest - gives you plenty of love, is clean and doesn't outstay its welcome. Big ups to Turtleneck for the cover art too.
