Julie Mason: Estate (Summer)

By Tim Page
Any live recording project is bound to be fraught with difficulties, but if this one was, it certainly doesn't show. The true essence of jazz can be found in the synergy between players, so the genre is best served by live performance, with sequencing definitely out of the question! Added to this, the audience ambience and applause incorporates itself to compliment and strengthen the music. Recorded by Doug Jane at the Leigh Sawmill Café in November 2004, 'Estate (Summer)' is a combination of originals and jazz standards, instrumental and vocal. Seasoned performer Julie Mason has gained exposure locally, and on the international stage, as well as tutoring at the Massey University Jazz Studies centre. In this offering her able piano and classic jazz vocals are augmented by local luminaries including Phil Broadhurst and Frank Gibson, to provide a mature, well presented album. Distributed by Elite Imports, this is one CD I'm going to enjoy for some time.
