The Nomad: Quinessence
By Ania Glowacz
'Quinessence' is the latest opus from DJ/songwriter/producer Daimon Schwalger - commonly known as The Nomad. While his 1998 debut 'Movement' was on the d'n'b tip, the Nomad has since veered more toward the downbeat trip hip hop end of the spectrum - with some often brilliant results. Originally from Christchurch, but now based in Wellington with his own studio Fresh Produce, the Nomad has collaborated with a wide range of talented NZ musicians and vocalists on 'Quinessence', his fifth proper release. He employs the talents of Rio Hemopo (bass), Tehi Mana Kerr (gat), MC Ras Stone (vocals), Imon Star (voice, keyboards, Moog bass), Vanessa Stacey (vox), DJ Shan (some neat scratching) among many others. His daughter's recorded heartbeat also makes a special guest appearance on Milly. Basically this beautifully packaged CD will appeal to all lovers of smooth groove NZ music. Special touches on this disc include delicious female vocals, cool violin, some choice MC-ing, and some great dub and jazz motifs. It also includes Daimon's Wellington Thirst final-winning composition Walk With Me.
