Heavy Jones Trio: Nobody Town
By Shaun Chait
The debut album from the ex-Christchurch now Auckland resident four-piece (tricky, eh?) is a poppy affair that will delight more AC and MOR audiences. There's no flash, no image speaking for the music, no too cool for school shenanigans - just good honest pop songwriting with lots of harmonies. Combining parts of Coldplay and Unbelievable Truth, HJT sound something like the more country-pop rock moments of Hunters And Collectors, Counting Crows, and The Mutton Birds last few outings. Highlights include Saturday Night, which deserves your attention, and Ramblin' On, which should really close the album. Recorded at The Lab in Mt Eden in 2003/4 with Olly Harmer producing and engineering, the album was mastered by Chris Chetland at Kog. Distribution is being handled by Global Routes. Guests performing include Ben King, Don McGlashan and Lindon Puffin. An album you could happily take home to meet the parents.
