The Phoenix Foundation: Pegasus

By Gareth Shute
The Phoenix Foundation's first album was driven by strong vocal melodies and an interesting use of instrumentation and studio experimentation. On 'Pegasus', the vocal harmonies can still be found on tracks like Damn the River and All in an Afternoon. Elsewhere on the album the vocal hooks are less infectious, though this shortfall is more than made up for by the amazing depth of sounds and textures. Instrumental tracks like the first single Hitchcock and Luke Buda's contribution Sea World have surreal moments where it is difficult to even imagine what instrument is being played. Some of the more simple songs show on repeated listens that they have hidden depths - for example, the banjo and viola on Nest Egg and the appearance of renowned musician Jeff Henderson on Cars of Eden. The production is also elegant, courtesy of Lee Prebble, and the result is a beautifully enticing album.
