Topp Twins: Flowergirls & Cowgirls
There aren't too many albums in the national collection that really espouse a true NZ country music. This is one. It is dedicated to the Topp's grandmother, Emily Hoad Dalziel, who had a special love for old-time country music, which is the predominant feel of this record. Though many of the songs are original there's no Big-Hat pretentiousness about them. There is some classic yodeling, done here with a strong and musical approach. Many of the songs are biographical - some are about dogs and losing the farm. There's a reflective mood about this album and the Topp Twins' tongue-in-cheek thing is noticeably absent, even their treatment of The Bridle Hanging on the Wall gets a serious workout. These two wonderful entertainers have become national icons and it's good to know, that while they can make us laugh at ourselves, they can also make us look at ourselves in a more sentimental way. A very special album.
