Evan Silva: Out Of The Shadows
By Mike Moroney
This is a great collection of r'n'b and soul produced and directed by Martin Winch with a huge band line-up including a great horn section. There is much more information on the sleeve about analogue recording and linear mixing, but really it's just a great rock and roll record. Silva has a smooth voice with a feel for the grooves if occasionally a little lightweight for the songs - but then we can't all be Joe Cocker. The most notable thing is that all the songs are written by Silva himself and so well written are they that you feel you've known them for a long time. But really, the standout feature is Winch's bold arrangements, along withthe choice of musicians. There are gospel overtones to the lyrics, some come on a little preachy - hardly surprising as Evan Silva is a minister of more than just soul music. Avery cruisey recording from beginning to end with plent y of variety.
