mr sterile Assembly: Hulagu

By Renee Jones
Meet the chamber punk group mr sterile Assembly, most of whom, including main songwriter mr sterile, were in the legendary progressive theatre troupe Red Mole. Instruments on ‘Hulagu’ include brass, cello and heaps of percussion; the melodica and brass are a nice touch. The musicianship isn’t overly polished and the vocals aren’t slick but you get the idea that’s not the point. Hey, it’s punk after all! The lyrics are often political, as heard in the title track: Hulagu Khan was the grandson of Genghis, and he invaded Baghdad in the 13th Century - inviting comparisons with George W. This album was released as part of a fundraising effort to get the Assembly to the Czech Republic; and the disc includes a video of the track Hulagu, plus a limited number come with a set of stamps designed by Kiwi prankster Bruce Grenville. The performance on this album suggests that mr sterile Assembly would be quite an experience live, and this album may not do them full justice; but as they’re probably in Eastern Europe by now, in the mean time pick up a copy of this and help them in their travels. www.mrsterile.co.nz
