Peter Forster: Beyond Knowing

By Tony Parker
This CD promises to take you on an inner journey of the awakening heart. Pretty heady stuff but singer/songwriter Forster’s songs exhibit a positive, if somewhat earnest approach, lyrically and musically that for some may create that avenue to the inner soul. His record label is not called Soulssong for nothing. Forster has a gentle folk-rock sound that highlights his finger style acoustic playing and melodic approach to songwriting. At times there’s even a catchy pop tune trying to break out of there somewhere. The sympathetic arrangements feature tasteful use of keyboards and ethnic instruments often adding an ethereal feel to the music that is totally in keeping with the lyrical content. Accompanying Forster on vocals are Susan Häll and Jala Raimon whose voices have a folky tinge that enhances Forster’s musical vision, while Eddie Rayner lends his dependable hand with production and keyboards. Overall a very polished if somewhat polite recording that I think achieves everything Peter Forster wanted of it.
