Urban Tramper: The Tree Ninja Always Gets Through
By Jessie Scoullar
Urban Tramper is a Wellington-based devout tree ninja, compelled to make music and determined to disseminate it for the betterment of the world. As soon as his wonderfully deep vocal tones kick in on track two, it’s clear that this album is something pretty special, reminiscent of Gramsci and Age Pryor but going beyond both of these to plumb new depths of echoing instrumental layers. Urban Tramper’s music is both mournful and joyous. It is homemade yet polished. Extracts of self-help recordings create a thread through the album, adding to the guitar base alongside congas, drums, bass, djembe and some lovely backing vocals. Starting out sombre the third track The Hum, Ever Present in its Persistence, Hums evokes the spirit of Thom Yorke then the pace shifts for the folky Campground Choir and highlight Poneke City Punk. The album is recorded and mixed by Urban Tramper with Disasteradio taking the mastering credit. You can get yours at independent record stores or online at www.oneislife.org.
