John Sutherland: Mealmarket St

By Peter Dent
All New Zealand Scots take note! Having spent many years performing at festivals and venues throughout Aotearoa (often solo, and always acoustic), John Sutherland has surfaced here with a stunning collection of acoustic folk and blues songs. His vocal style is honest, touching and sincere, and the instrumentation is in just the right balance to lift the lyrics and make them stand out. ‘Mealmarket St’ was a finalist for this year’s Folk Music Tui award, and deservedly so. With support from the talented Davy Stuart, James Wilkinson et al, Sutherland creates some real magic on these 14 folk and blues tunes. Listeners might have trouble deciphering some of the ‘auld’ English used from time to time, but those of us who have grown up with Scottish immigrant parents won’t find it a problem at all! A charming and delightful album that is highly recommended.
