Jekyll: The Fine Line
By David Harris
Shaun Garea’s vocals are slightly erratic and often surprising - sometimes velvet, sometimes almost guttural and at other times unintelligible. Richard Smith’s committed, driven bass and Darren Abrams original binding drumming offer a solid base for guitarist James Dunlop - super sweet clean picking on some tracks, hard, heavy and hellbound on others. The stand out tracks for me were Heads For Sale and Focus Locusts, both at the mellow end of this Christchurch hard rock band’s scale. Musically this album stands up but it’s a shame that the recording can sound tinny and muffled when it gets heavy on some tracks. Recorded, produced and mastered by Dunlop, presumably in his homestudio facility, it is nonetheless a commendable self-released debut album.
