Maximiliano: Rio Lights Auckland Nights
By Tim Page
Originally hailing from Brazil, Maximiliano has had a varied musical career, the latest chapter of which has seen him hanging his hat in NZ. This album reflects that journey with a diverse fusion of musical textures. Everything on this album is done well. The instrumentation is superb and the recording quality is great. Some tracks include vocals, others are purely instrumental, the overall feel is of mellow jazz with some notable diversions. Find My Way is more urban in style, and may be taking the idea of fusion and diversity a little too far. Indian Stone is a standout track - the amalgamation of Maximiliano’s very cool jazz guitar, synthesised sitar and steel drums creating an exotic mystical feel. Musical passion is evident, with great performances from the various contributors making this the sort of music to accompany a late weekend breakfast, or mid-week a soothing antidote to city traffic queues.
