Sweet Factory: Beautiful Sin
By Claire Nelson
It has indeed been a few years since we heard from Dave Fitzsimons, but the former frontman of Wellington band Parka is back after a required break from writing with a new title, Sweet Factory, and a catchy collection of new songs. Although recorded, mixed and mastered in Dorchester, this album somehow has a very local sound - reminiscent of the local Kiwi sounds of the late ‘90s. It’s easy to feel nostalgic... (think Dead Flowers, Weta, Delta), but at the same time it is quite refreshing. Quirky numbers like Milk It and Pornstar blend with easy pop tunes like Someone Like You and Too Far Gone, making this is a sweet debut for Fitzsimons’ new project. Simple songs, unpretentious lyrics and Fitzsimons’ enjoyably easy voice. A nice little gem.
