Norman Meehan: The Bells

By Rachel Fallon
This instrumental, original jazz album was surprisingly well recorded, live to ADAT during the winter of 2002. It is a collection of pieces, mostly written by Meehan, influenced by the likes of the great Charles Mingus and John Scofield. Performing in the piano quintet were Meehan on piano, Lucien Johnson sax and flute, Nick van Dijk trumpet and trombone, Tim Jaray bass and Steve Cournane on drums. All demonstrate a high standard of accomplished musicianship, further emphasised by their inspiring solos. Three of the five have gone on to work in jazz scenes overseas, but plan to come together once again to promote this recorded collaboration. The seven tracks create a freshly balanced mix of chill out and up beat, ideal for either sunny or rainy Sunday afternoon listening, proving once again the rich quality of jazz NZ has to offer the world if given half a chance.
