The Mint Chicks: F**k the Golden Youth
By Chris Leggett
After two well-received EPs and generous servings of hype, it is finally crunch time. Does The Mint Chicks’ debut album deliver? Yes and no. There is more of the same that made EPs ‘Octagon, Octagon, Octagon’ and ‘Anti-Tiger’ so great - the unique and manic sound this Auckland band achieves without relying heavily on guitar-driven effects. Popular singles Opium of the People and (re-recorded) Licking Letters return with their current high-rotate single after which the album is named. Ironically the album is let down slightly because it lacks the variety of the EPs. The funky minimalism of, say, Anti-Tiger is missing, and so too is the melodious howl-along of Post No Bills. The Mint Chicks made their name by pushing boundaries to great effect. There’s more of that on offer here, but the new material surprisingly comes off as more ‘uniform’.
