Enkrypta: Cause B
By Ania Glowacz
This debut release of Tauranga drum n' bass DJ/producer Enkyrpta carries all the hallmarks of NZ drum n' bass excellence. The influence of pioneering perpetrators Concord Dawn can be heard, as can shades of Shapeshifter, not to mention some of the best overseas exponents such as Britain's Tech Itch. Confident, multi-faceted, just that bit different. There are all sorts of ingredients thrown into the sample/sequence blender - 'amens', classical runs, acoustic guitar, quirky manipulated sounds, some cheesy goth synths, as well as some tight programming, a lot of fat drum sounds, plenty of melody though the heavy is also well represented. New label Movom presents this 10-track journey of "samples now tamed, sounds yet unnamed and those that remain..." - a well-put summary. The visuals are stylin' as well, with something to say. Quoting the artist himself: "The advancement of technology is leading artists to the very source of sound itself - in turn creating any sound imaginable, and an awareness in the individual of infinity..." It's certainly an arresting debut, top marks.
