LOTUS: Hybrid Flower

By Jessie Scoullar
Chances are that even if you haven't heard the name Lotus, you'll have heard her voice. Her recording career began in 1999 with the Nomad's Where Are You and continued on to collaborations with a handful of the capital's finest including several tracks featured on compilations. 'Loop Select 003' features her excellent first solo effort Slumber, which is track nine on 'Hybrid Flower' and acts as something of an anchor for what appears at times to be a shallow effort. On the first few listens, Lotus' unchanging vocal style failed to impress, but with perseverance some merit began to surface. Opening track Dark Clouds features a good hook and while Intrickasies, Waiting and How You Grow veer towards wavery, Waiting is quite beautiful with understated vocals complementing Rhian Sheehan's lunar soundscapes. Lotus has solid contributors in the shape of Sheehan, Freq, Funk'n'SloCuts, Confucius, Twinset, Dr Benway, Mr Hartless and Rhombus. While it's a promising debut, at times it's easier to tune out than tune in.
