PHANTOM POWER: Future Far I

By Renee Jones
Phantom Power is the solo moniker of Matt Eddy, of Dunedin dub/reggae band Zuvuya. Created in Eddy's own Fat Eddy's studio, 'Future Far I' is a lovingly crafted album of deep dub excursions. Eddy draws upon a range of classic dub forms and studio techniques made famous by the Jamaican masters, with the use of melodica, layers of percussion, the occasional vocal loop and, amongst the most important dub ingredients, the judicious use of space and well-placed reverb. Hail Jah opens on a slow groove, the tempo of the tracks picking up further in, on tunes such as Ital and Sai Baba. The pace mellows again and the album is nicely rounded off with the title track, resulting in a smooth and cohesive listening experience. 'Future Far I' reflects Eddy's deep love of the genre as well as his Rastafarian convictions (seen in the titles and feel of songs such as Call To Jah and Give Thanks and Praise). This album doesn't break any new ground in the dub arena, but it is a satisfying listen and fans should find it a full and flavoursome soundtrack to summer. Email phantompower@eudoramail.com
