DJ GLYD: Selected Strains

By Stephen Jewell
In DJ Glyd, Christchurch-based DJ/producer Gareth Fletcher has chosen an appropriate monicker. 'Selected Strains,' his debut CD does tend to drift, or glide, by in a pleasant, if not always memorable manner. Fletcher hosts RDU's NZ electronica show, The Green Room and he was also the South Island winner of the 2003 Thirst DJ competition. Vin The Bruiser, the track that won Fletcher that title, is included and it is typical of the release's output in contrasting a skittering breakbeat with a slowly building electronic pulse. The Flatland Stumbler, an ode to Fletcher's Christchurch home, opens in interesting, upbeat fashion. The remainder of the tracks tend to explore more laidback, ambient territory and Fletcher is obviously influenced by our electronic pioneers like Rotor +, Pitch Black and indeed the Kog Transmissions catalogue as a whole. Overall, 'Selected Strains' is an accomplished, promising debut.
