KIM WARD: Outside My Square

Kim Ward has a delightful voice, warm and original. A Tauranga based singer songwriter, Ward appears regularly in duos but this is her first solo effort. The 11 all-original tracks feature some fine guitar playing by Ward herself, although in some tracks the 'plugged in' sound is a bit harsh and no amount of chorus is going to cover it up. The strongest features of this album are the arrangements and the contributions of the additional musicians without which many of the songs would just be two chord jams. Gorgeous percussion and fabulous bass playing are sometimes obliterated by totally over-the-top guitar solos - someone was having fun pulling out their best Van Halen and Di Meola licks! All in all though a warm and pleasant album, the songs are unhurried and the textures rich. Contact outsidemysquare@yahoo.co.nz
