MARINEVILLE: Diving the Wreck

By Tony Parker
Alt. rockers Marineville actually recorded this album twice. Not satisfied with the initial recordings they went for a less atmospheric, more direct approach second time round with the emphasis being placed firmly on their abrasive twin guitar attack. It's a sound that echoes earlier noisy kiwis like Bailter Space and Snapper as well as current sonic guitar combo Jakob. Late '70s new wave also gets referenced with the two guitar thing showing more than a nod towards New York bands such as Television. The resulting sound shows a more aggressive rock noise that still retains some of the textural characteristics of the band's previous work. Combined with a heightened sense of dynamics this approach works well for the band although there is a lack of focus lyrically with the words often not matching the intensity of the music. Ultimately it's the instrumental passages that define this band and the decision to re-record was the right one for Marineville as 'Diving the Wreck' benefits from the simpler, more raucous direction taken.
