MIKAELA DEWAR: Overdressed

If I were going to choose one word to sum up this debut release by Mikaela Dewar it would be 'eclectic'. Consisting of a mix of folk, jazz, country, blues and funk you can never be quite sure what you are going to hear next. Originally from Christchuch, Dewar has been the winner of many NZ music awards including the Gore Golden Guitar Award. Now based in Lubbock Texas where she was the 2002 and 2003 South Plains College Female Songwriter of the Year! Joined by a young group of Lubbock musicians, the album strides along as Dewar blends a variety of styles (at times within the same track), with her humorous social commentaries. Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. Sure the playing is fine and there is nothing wrong with the recording but the finished result seems stylistically confused - a case of more is too much.
