BATRIDER: They Said You're Hideous
By Renee Jones
I must confess that my curiosity about Batrider was first piqued because I'm a comics fan, and upon finding out that cartoonist Toby Morris is in the band, I wondered what sort of noise they might make. A good noise as it turns out. Live the band have great energy and Sarah Chadwick's vocals are striking. They impress again on Batrider's debut album, her raw, gravelly, impassioned vocals, stacked alongside Julia McFarlane's angular guitar and backed up by the rhythm section of Morris (bass) and Tara Wilcox (drums) pack quite a punch. Morris gets a vocal outing on Ark d'Triumph, which somehow reminds me of heavier version of an early Verlaines tune. Number One is a beautiful angst-filled number. The darkness of the songs is humorously offset by the lack of seriousness of the band's publicity (their label is called No Promo). They write intense music but don't take themselves too seriously which is refreshing. 'They Said You're Hideous' has been on my stereo constantly and is a great debut.
