Fly My Pretties: Live At Bats
By Jessie Scoullar
One of a kind - a 100% live recording of the stage performance that ran over four nights at Wellington's Bats Theatre, featuring an all-star cast representing most facets of the Wellington scene from indie through to rock, funk and dub. Ringmaster Barnaby Weir joins Mike Fabulous, Darryn Sigley, Toby Laing, Age Pryor, Tessa Rain, Sam Scott, Daniel Wheetman, Brendan Moran and Nato from Paselode. Apart from the beautiful Singing in My Soul by Pryor and the touching Quiet Girl displaying Scott's knack for sweet indie pop numbers, all the songs are Weir's own. There are a few old favourites (Bag of Money, All the Goodness and a refreshing rework of Turn It Around) and lots of tasty new tracks. Highlight Let's Roll provides the 'climax' with a keen-edged frustration in Weir's vocals and an urgent beat provided by a rock rhythm section of Moran and Nato. Also noteworthy are Lucky and the title track in which Weir explores the need to leave Aotearoa to seek one's fortune. Masterminded by Weir and championed by Loop Recordings, this is a truly unique album and a great consolation to all those who didn't get to see the show.
